Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa. The Disney resort, which is under construction at Ko ‘Olina Resort on Oahu, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2011.

The name Aulani means “the place that speaks for the great ones,” or “the place that speaks with deep messages,” said Joe Rohde, senior vice president of creative for Walt Disney. According to the Hawaiian Dictionary Aulani is a noun that means “messenger of a chief.”
The company hasn’t said how much the project costs but estimates put it at about $800 million. When completed, the new resort will have 360 hotel rooms and 481 two-bedroom equivalent Disney Vacation Club villas. It will also include an 18,000 square-foot spa, two restaurants, 14,545 square-foot conference center, and 48,685 square feet of outdoor venues, including pools, hot tubs, a snorkeling lagoon and a variety of programs for children.

Four Seasons Hualalai Resort – View from room 212

Four Seasons Hualalai Resort – Sunset at the Beach Tree Bar
Our recent stay at Four Seasons Hualalai gave me the opportunity to see the new $40-million enhancements to the resort. Twenty new one- and two- bedroom suites have been created, offering ocean views and spacious indoor/outdoor living space. The Hualalai Spa expanded to double in size. The additions and changes are beautiful and the Spa area feels very Hawaiian. We really liked the changes at the Beach Tree Restaurant and Bar with the new seating areas and larger space. With a casual “beach house” feel, the lounge area is comfortable and fun. A new chef and menu features fresh, local market cuisine. My only concern was the fire pits placed in the sand near the bar area. The smoke from the fires comes into the bar/dining areas and on the two nights we ate there, the smoke was blowing onto us quite strongly. Maybe they could be moved farther South depending on wind direction, or used only on windless nights.
Our ocean view accommodations, room 212 at the Kings Pond, were lovely and very comfortable and peaceful. I think the resort is so enjoyable because it is spread out and the buildings are only two stories high. The beach front runs all along the resort perimeter, with huge sea turtles climbing up onto the sand to rest and be admired. The waves are illuminated in the evening, so day or night, ocean view rooms can see (and hear) the breaking surf.
The staff service levels are outstanding with really exceptional, caring people. As an example, one evening when we arrived at the Beach Tree a little bit late, Natashia went out of her way to make sure that although we were a few minutes too late for seating in the restaurant, she offered to see if the chef could still serve us from the dinner menu. We declined and ordered delicious appetizers from the bar menu, but her genuine thoughtfulness stood out.
The Hualalai Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus is beautiful and fun to play. Because it is open to resort guests and Hualalai private residents only, it is in perfect condition and the pace of play is ideal.
Bright green grass contrasts with black lava and if your ball should head out of bounds to the lava, don’t bother looking for it! They are getting ready for the upcoming annual Champions Tour PGA event in January, the Mitsubishi Electric Championship, so it will be fun to see the tournament broadcast.

Hualalai Golf Course – Hole #17, Par 3 – Susan & Ron Bluhm
I have long considered Four Seasons Hualalai to be the finest resort in Hawaii and we will continue to recommend it confidently. It is ideal for couples or families and creates an exceptional vacation experience. It was just announced that Four Seasons Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu was awarded the new Forbes Travel Guide Five Star (formerly Mobil Five Star) award status and AAA’s Five Diamond status. They are certainly well-deserved.

A 15-month, $40 million renovation to the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai on the Big Island was completed Aug. 10.
“Since it opened in 1996, Four Seasons Resort Hualalai has enjoyed a reputation as best of the best,” the resort’s general manager, Robert Whitfield, said in a statement. “These new enhancements raise the bar for luxury resorts in Hawaii and solidify the resort’s reputation as a place where guests return to relax, celebrate success and create memories.”
The work included the creation of 20 new suites, extensive renovations to its 28,000-square-foot spa, beachfront restaurant, lounge and bar, and the addition of two new retail stores.
A collection of one- and two-room accommodations, the property’s 20 new suites feature between 1,150 and 1,950 square feet of indoor and outdoor living space and prominent ocean views.
The resort is offering guests a $1,000 room credit through Sept. 30. Call Stellar Travel for details on promotional rates and packages.

One of our Maui insiders offers the following tips to help enhance your Hawaii vacation experience:

Guri Guri….like sherbet or sorbet but with milky taste. So ono licious and cheap. Tasaka’s Guri Guri behind Longs Drugs in Maui Mall in Kahului..Only place you can get it in Hawaii!
Nakalele Point and blow hole- just past mile marker 38..this blow hole can jet water up to 100 feet in the air if the surf is right. It’s just a short hike down from the road. Be VERY careful and don’t get too close to the blow hole. Can be dangerous!…But pretty impressive!

Napili Kai Beach Resort..small intimate “Hawaiian” resort..spectacular beach!!!…now 50% off ocean view studios for travel for the balance of August. Unbelievable!! Package it with some of the best airfares of the season and take a long weekend getaway before the end of the summer!
Cheap Local Eats …Sam Satos and Frans Island Grill..both in Wailuku..good local plate lunches..Try Fran’s awesome loco moco…rice with hamburger patty on the top then with fried egg on top of that..then smothered with brown gravy..OMG.. the nitrates!! For a little extra kick..add some chili pepper water!
Beginning and intermediate snorkeling -none better than at mile marker 14 on the way from Kahului Airport to Lahaina. You’ll be sharing it with quite a few other snorkelers, but easy access right off the road. Very calm and safe snorkeling. Great for the keikis!!!

Kaanapali Alii…score some great rates at this luxury beachfront resort this fall while they undergo the addition of a second pool and spa plus a brand new state of the art fitness center. Killer construction rates and you get access to the pools at the Westin,Marriott and Sheraton! Significant upgrades for just $30-$45 per night!!
