I’ve always wanted to go to South America,  hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and see the Moai on Rapa Nui (Easter Island).  My adventure began in Cusco where I spent two days acclimating to the altitude—11,000 ft.   Along with my hiking buddy, we explored the city on our own and met with the guide who outlined the game plan for the 4-day hike. While walking in the footsteps of the Incas, there are no words that adequately describe what we saw along the trail.  We explored ruins, saw llamas and enjoyed delicious food prepared daily by our Peruvian cook. Exhausted, yet happy, each night we camped in tents high in the Andes.  On the final day, we came upon Machu Picchu and witnessed what explorer Hiram Bingham discovered 100 years ago – a vast complex of stone buildings and shrines towered over by the mountain Wayna Picchu. Simply breathtaking.

But Peru was only half the fun. Chile, and more specifically, Rapa Nui beckoned. This remote island is home to the famous Moai—volcanic rock statues that have captivated the world for centuries.  We spent three days learning the history of Rapa Nui and exploring the mysteries of its Moai. There was no TV or radio, so it was pure relaxation.

It was the trip of a lifetime and Stellar Travel helped turn this traveler’s dream into a reality.
