Most people head to Tulum to see the Mayan ruins. While these are amazing, don’t miss Tulum’s nearby cenotes for a very different experience.
Cenotes are natural sinkholes, great places to swim and explore. One in particular, Cenote Angelita found just south of Tulum, harbors a secret underground river that offers scuba divers a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
To find the cenote, dive down a hundred feet through dark, foggy waters to reach the bottom, where you’ll discover a secret river. Adding to the magical experience are trees that surround the cenote like an eerie underground forest.
This bizarre river is created by the hydrogen sulfates that separate salt from fresh water. The hydrogen sulfates are so heavy that they move in their own current, separate from the water around them, generating the effect of an underground river.
