Whether exploring lively markets, going on a safari, or relaxing on pristine beaches, Africa has a way of touching your soul.
Tracy Hughes, a Certified Travel Consultant at Stellar Travel, recently traveled throughout southeast Africa. Read on as she shares her experiences, recommendations, and the memorable moments she will never forget!
How was the flight and travel from the United States to Africa?
I had a very disappointing experience with Lufthansa’s business class. The seating arrangement is 2x2x2, which meant that being in a window seat forced me to climb over the person next to me to get out of my seat. Additionally, the Lufthansa business class seat had an inflatable feature that didn’t work correctly, leaving me lying on metal bars for the entire 10-hour flight.
Based on my experience, I recommend British Airways over Lufthansa, which offers a much better seating arrangement with their 1x2x1 configuration in their pods
Regarding traveling within Africa, I highly recommend AirLink as they are the most reliable option. We used Wilderness Safari’s private planes for our travels between camps , which were terrific.
Do you have any long-journey travel hacks?
I packed an extra set of clothes for my 30-hour journey to and from Africa. Upon landing in Munich, I refreshed with a shower in the lounge before flying overnight to Johannesburg, where I showered again. Have that option after long flights makes a huge difference.
Remember to bring the correct plugs for your travels, and consider bringing a heavy-duty external battery for your phone. Be aware of each country’s regulations and allow at least three hours for connecting flights. Lastly, ensure you have travel insurance with primary medical care and evacuation coverage, especially for trips to Africa.
What was the weather like throughout the trip?
It was dry and very hot, marking the start of the rainy season, which brought several thunderstorms and lightning storms.
What were your accommodations and transportation in Africa?
During my time in Africa, I used various transportation methods, including van transfers, small aircraft flights, and a two-hour boat ride. I started in Kasane, Botswana, at Ngoma Safari Lodge, which has a stunning plunge pool room overlooking the Chobe River.
Then, I transferred to Toka Leya Lodge in Zambia, close to Victoria Falls. From there, I flew to Ruckomechi Tented Camp on the Zambezi River, where you can enjoy a night in a ‘Star Bed’.
I took a boat ride to Chikwenya Tented Camp for a walking safari. Finally, I flew with Wilderness Air to Linkwasha Camp in the Hwange Private Concession, where I explored the smaller Little Makalolo Camp with its incredible viewing hide.
Africa has abundant natural wonders, incredible scenery, and wildlife. What stood out to you the most?
Since I had never visited southeast Africa before, I was incredibly excited to explore Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park, Chobe National Park, and the Zambezi River during this trip. Visiting Victoria Falls had always been a dream of mine, and it certainly did not disappoint. The falls are situated on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. However, due to limited water flow on the Zambian side, we chose to visit from the Zimbabwean side.
One of the highlights was finally seeing a pack of endangered Painted dogs (wild dogs), which was a fantastic experience since they are very difficult to spot. I also saw the majestic endangered white rhinos, protected in the wild 24/7 due to the threat of poaching.
What type of traveler would you recommend traveling to Africa?
Africa is a fantastic destination for couples, families with older children, honeymooners, and multi-generational families. However, due to age restrictions at most camps, it is not ideal for very young children. Many camps offer family tents with a main adult bedroom and an adjoining room with twin beds for kids.
I typically recommend younger clients who can handle hot weather, long flights, and rugged game drives. For older visitors, I’d be sure they can manage to get in and out of game vehicles and rough rides. I can suggest more gentle experiences with smaller camps and paved roads if needed.
What was the highlight of the trip?
There were many highlights, but here are a few:
- Seeing a pack of elusive, endangered African Wild Dogs, also known as Painted Dogs.
- Experiencing my first walking safari was extremely exciting and nerve-wracking.
- Spotting seven heavily protected and endangered White Rhinos.
- Visiting Victoria Falls.
- Going into several hides to observe elephants up close and personal.
- Visiting the Ngamo Primary School and spending time with the children, part of Wilderness’s regional projects.
- Meeting with the Scorpion Anti-Poaching Unit and learning how they work to combat poaching daily, another important Wilderness project in the area.
What do you wish you would have known before traveling to Africa?
I wish I had known to pack less clothing due to the weight limits on the small aircrafts. Each camp offers complimentary laundry service (except for undergarments), making packing light easier. Note that in Africa, laundry services generally do not wash underwear. Detergent is always provided, and items dry quickly.
Did you get to experience a safari?
I went on a game drive two to three times a day at each camp, including early morning, late afternoon, and night drives. One morning, I even had the thrilling experience of participating in a walking safari.
Additionally, I enjoyed two late afternoon boat rides on the Zambezi River, which offered incredible opportunities to view wildlife and witness stunning sunsets.
