640px-taktshang_tigers_nest_monastery_paro_valley_2Hugging the mountainside 3,000 feet above the Paro Valley is Tiger’s Nest, or Paro Taktsang Monastery. It is one of the holiest sites in Bhutan, as well as a breathtaking place to visit.

To reach it, take a 2-hour hike (or a pony ride) up the mountain. With emerald forests, snowcapped mountains, and winding rivers in the distance, the scene is stunning even before you reach your destination.

Upon arrival, head inside for some quiet contemplation, and outside enjoy the sweeping views of Paro Valley.

Legend has it that in the 8th century, an Indian Buddhist guru flew to the site upon the back of a magical tiger. He then meditated there for three years, and is credited with introducing Buddhism to Bhutan. To commemorate this, Tiger’s Nest was built in the 1600’s, and has been rebuilt several times since.
