unspecifiedCreamy egg custard on a flaky tart, sprinkled with cinnamon and served warm out of the oven…this is the world-famous Pastéis de Belém, and it can only be found at one very special bakery.

If you’d like to sample this delightful Portuguese pastry, visit Bélem, a historic district in the western part of Lisbon. There, follow your nose to the shop with the same name as their signature offering, Pastéis de Belém.

The bakery was opened in 1837, and continues to follow their original recipe to this day. Their recipe dates back even further, to the 16th century Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site that can be found just down the road.

Of course, the celebrated recipe remains a closely guarded secret of the bakery.

While similar tarts are often imitated around the world, you’ll have to head to Bélem if you want to enjoy the original (and many would argue, the world’s best) Portuguese custard tarts.

Insight Vacations offers a tour of “Spain and Portugal in Style,” which visits Bélem as well as many other unforgettable highlights of the region. Let yourself be pampered with five star deluxe accommodations, world-class dining, and picture-perfect sightseeing on a Luxury Gold tour.
