On October 1, 2020 the REAL ID act will go into the final stages of its enactment for commercial air travel.  This means your standard driver’s license may not be accepted by TSA at the airport.

Driver’s licenses need to be REAL ID compliant to be used as identification to fly domestically. This includes scannable microchip technology in every driver’s license or identification card.  In Washington State, this means an Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) or an Enhanced ID (EID).

Now is a good time to start thinking about updating your license, state licensing agencies are expecting long lines and wait times leading up to October 2020.

To get a EDL/EID you’ll need to locate a licensing office, bring the appropriate documents which include proof of citizenship, identity, and residence, have your Social Security number available, and pay the Department of Licensing fee.  Following the document review you can expect a short in-person interview.  Allow 2-3 weeks to receive your permanent EDL/EID.

Passports, military ID, Global Entry, Nexus and Sentry cards are already REAL ID compliant and can be used on any domestic flight.  A list of all state REAL ID compliant driver’s license’s are at our website.

I look forward to working with you on your next trip whether it’s International or Domestic with your new REAL ID!
