It’s one of Thailand’s largest seafood markets – but the Maeklong Railway Market’s main claim to fame comes from its unusual setting.
The Bangkok market is literally set up on the train tracks. When the train approaches, vendors quickly disassemble their awnings and step aside to make way. Metal tables holding seafood and fresh meat are wheeled away from the oncoming train.
I saw this amazing market when I was in Bangkok last month. It was surprising to watch the train go by less than an arm’s reach away. Of course, the locals were completely unfazed. The train actually passes through quite slowly.
We were lucky enough to have Su, an expert Trails of Indochina guide, with us. She helped us navigate the market and explained some of the odd items we were seeing for sale.
