UNESCO has just announced that Neapolitan pizza will be honored with official world heritage status.

The news comes after two million Italians signed a petition requesting the designation. Now, UNESCO has affirmed that the Naples-based art of “pizzaiuoli,” or pizza-making, is a special tradition worthy of respect and recognition.

The art of pizza-making includes the entire process – mixing, kneading, and flipping the dough, topping it, and baking it to perfection in a wood-fired oven.

While most UNESCO world heritage items are notable sites or places, there are a few intangible cultural items that rank on its list: the Dutch windmill and watermill craft, Indonesian boat making, Turkish coffee, and Mexican cuisine, among others.

If you’d like a taste of real Italian pizza, Seabourn Encore will visit the port of Naples next June on its 10-day Mediterranean Isles voyage from Rome to Barcelona. Give your Stellar Travel advisor a call today to reserve your spot on-board.
