Refurbishing old cruise ships is nothing new, but Silversea has done something the luxury cruise world has never seen before: they cut their ship Silver Spirit in half.
This ambitious feat was part of a plan to lengthen the ship and increase its capacity. The project reportedly took 500 skilled workers nearly 450,000 hours of labor to complete.
After the ship was cut, a pre-built extension nearly 50 feet long was inserted. Then, the ship was carefully reconnected and renovated to the highest standards. Changes include more staterooms and enhanced public areas, designed along the lines of Silversea’s newest flagship Silver Muse.
